Making Ladders!

More chain maille next, this time using the Japanese lattice earring technique, and are made using the method set out below. This is from the same kit as the flower earrings in my last post, and they are actually a bit easier to make!!

Hope you like them!

Chain Maille Earrings – Lattice Work

Tools Needed: Round-Nose & Flat-Nose Pliers (or round-nose pliers and a jump-ring opener)

Materials Needed Large and small jump rings,  2 x Silver Plated Fishhook Earwires

Method:

  1. Begin by opening all the large rings and closing all the small rings.
  2. Pick up one large ring, and thread 6 small rings onto it. Close the large ring. Thread another large ring through all the small rings and close. You should now have a pair of large rings side by side, being held together by 6 small rings. (Fig 1) Each section will be built in a similar way.
  3. ADD THE EAR WIRE Open a small ring. Thread it through a pair of small rings on section one. Thread it through the loop on the ear wire and close the ring. Open a second small ring and thread it through the same way. There will still be 4 small rings hanging at the bottom of the pair of large rings. (Fig 2)
  4. ADD SECTION 2 Pick up a large open ring. Place 4 small closed rings on it. Thread it through 2 small rings on the bottom left of section 1. Close the large ring. Thread a second ring through the same path, so the large rings are double, as in section 1. This completes section 2 of the chain. There will still be 4 small rings hanging free at the bottom of section 2, and 2 small rings hanging free at the bottom of section 1. (Fig 3)
  5. ADD SECTION 3 Pick up a third large open jump ring. Place 2 small jump rings on it. Thread it through the remaining pair of small rings on the bottom of section 1, then through the right-hand pair of rings on section 2. Close the ring. Add a second large ring through the same path. This is section 3. There will still be a pair of small rings hanging free on section 2 and a pair hanging free on section 3. (Fig 4)
  6. ADD SECTION 4 Thread 4 small rings on 1 large ring. Thread it through both hanging pairs on sections 2 and 3. Close the ring. Add a second ring through the same path. There will be four small rings hanging free from section 4. (see Fig 5)
  7. ADD SECTION 5 Thread 4 small rings on 1 large ring. Thread it through the left-hand pair on section 4. Close the ring. Add a second ring through the same pair. There will still be 2 small rings hanging free from section 4, and 4 small rings hanging from section 5. (see Fig 6)
  8. ADD SECTION 6 Thread two small rings on one large ring. Thread it through the right-hand pair of hanging rings on section 5. Close the ring. Add a second ring through the same path. There will still be two small rings hanging free from both section 5 and section 6. (Fig 7)
  9. FINISH THE EARRING Open a large ring and thread it through the hanging pairs on sections 5 and 6. Close the ring. Add a second ring through the same path. This completes the earring. Repeat steps 1-8 to make the second earring.

And your earrings are complete!!

As usual, pictures to illustrate. Not the greatest ones from the instruction sheet, but done my best!
